2021 Summer Road Trip Safety Tips

Three young women driving in a car. If you and your family are taking a road trip this summer, there are a few things you should keep in mind to ensure your safety and avoid a car accident. According to the National Safety Council, traffic fatalities and injuries are more likely to occur during the summer months, especially in July and August. When planning your road trip, be sure to follow these tips to make sure you and your occupants are safe while driving.

1. Check Your Vehicle for Recalls

In many cases, owners are not even aware that their vehicle has been recalled for a defect and needs to be repaired. Before going on your road trip, check to see if your vehicle has any recalls that haven’t been repaired. You can easily do this by entering your vehicle identification number (VIN) on the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration’s website. You can look up recalls for your vehicle by visiting this link: https://www.nhtsa.gov/Recalls.

2. Have Your Vehicle Serviced

Regular maintenance is an important part of keeping your vehicle safe to drive. Prior to your road trip, bring your vehicle to a reputable mechanic for preventive maintenance, such as oil changes, battery replacements, tire rotations, and more. In addition, make sure your tires are at the correct pressure. You can find the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended PSI on a placard on the driver’s side door or in your owner’s manual.

3. Do Not Leave Children or Animals in the Car

Never leave a child or animal unattended in a parked car, even if the windows are down or the vehicle is on. In a parked car, the temperature can heat up quickly, reaching deadly levels after just a few minutes. In addition, if the engine is left running, unattended children may accidentally switch gears or disengage the parking brake.
